Lately, I've been in a rut with my makeup. Normally, it's just the same ol' brown/nude shades on my eyes with a pop of color on my lips. Last month, I received an email from Sephora that offered complimentary makeovers to V.I.B's (Very Important Beauty Insider) during the month of May. Ready for a change of pace, I booked an appointment, hoping to get a few ideas for new color.
I decided, when I arrived for my appointment, to opt for a summery yet natural look. Something I could wear during the day. I also tend to use natural, organic make up as much as possible. Definitely nothing with animal by-products. In hindsight, I should have prefaced that I wanted only vegan products to the makeup artist. Just stating organic & natural wasn't specific enough. Though she did a good job of choosing the colors,& her heart was in the right place, I found out after the session that most of the products she used on me were not vegan. She used Josie Maran & Urban Decay cosmetics with Super by Perricone skin products.
First things first, she had me remove my tinted moisturizer so we could start fresh. Then, she applied Super Detox Elixir to my face which was followed with Super Daylight Savings moisturizer and Super Bright Eyed eye cream. On my lips, she used Super Lush Lips conditioning balm (felt amazing but has beeswax).
Once the skin was prepped, she used Josie Maran Argan Primer Mist followed by Urban Decay De-Slick in a Tube for my T-Zone. She then applied Josie Maran Argan Illuminizer (which contains carmine as a coloring agent) for a bit of glow. Afterwards, a foundation was used in the form of Josie Maran Argan Tinted Moisturizer in Linen.
Now, I usually apply concealer & powder after I apply my base but Heather did my eye makeup first, stating that mistakes were easier to clean up. So, she proceeded to apply my eye makeup. Everything used was from a palette by Josie Maran, except for the mascara, which was a new one by Urban Decay, Cannonball (which has beeswax). Oh, and the palette, which had such beautiful soft shades, contained lanolin oil. Lanolin oil!!! For someone who claims to have an eco-conscious cosmetics company, I find it hard to believe that carmine & lanolin oil are being added to the products. But, I digress...
Heather applied Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer Potion and suggested we apply the lighter shades first. Mostly, because it's best to build the color on, as opposed to starting with the dark shades, in which case it's harder to add the light color without changing the dark. And here I've been starting with the dark! Good to know.
She then used the dark brown color as my eyeliner, by dipping a wet brush into it (the same color was also used to fill in my brows and to stipple in the contour in my eyes). Under my eyes, she finally applied Josie Maran Blend Concealer in Sand (which has lanolin oil). She added a pop of color with a vivid blue eyeshadow, Urban Decay's Haight, underneath my lower lashes and over the brown liner. She then used a shimmery sage from the Josie Maran palette to blend the blue and brown together.
Once the eyes were done, Heather applied Josie Maran Argan Pressed Powder to my face followed by Josie Maran Argan Bronzing Powder. Which are both vegan! The color on my cheeks was another Josie Maran product, Argan Cream Blush in Sunset. Too bad it also contains lanolin oil.
The finishing touch was a lip stain topped off with a nude gloss, both by Josie Maran. I've used both of the products before, just in darker shades. The lip stain, in Tango, is gorgeous but in my experience, it didn't last very long. I had one, in Flamenco, and it dried up within a month. I love the shade of gloss she used, Optimism, but am not sure if it's vegan.
All in all, I do love the finished look. And, as much as I wanted to buy everything, the beeswax, lanolin, and carmine in certain items that prevented me from doing so.
